Mechanical Engineering Design co-op at Tesla. There's certainly a lot to say about my experiences at Tesla, I've done such an incredible amount in the six short months I was there from January - June 2018. It's safe to say it has been the best six months of my life. The work was incredibly fulfilling, to be a part of a company that's changing the world, while getting a change to solve some of the hardest engineering problems out there. I'm proud to say I played a part in accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy. There's a lot to say about my experienceI have several more projects to add, so stay tuned!
Problem
-
Needed a new component to protect an existing component that is already in production
-
Must be injection molded, cheap to manufacture, and pass all validation tests
Approach
-
Went through 50+ 3D prints in two months along with several major design iterations
-
Trialled the parts for installability and functionality on test vehicles and the active general assembly line for validation
Results
-
Parts passed all validation trails and purchase orders were placed for mass production
-
Worked with logistics to ensure parts would arrive in the factory ASAP for install on in-production vehicles
-
Trained general assembly workers to install new component
-
Successfully designed, manufactured, and implemented new parts on the Model 3 within four months
Note: I do not have any pictures for this particular component that I can share, but I will post links to publicly availably tear-downs if I come across them
